Recognise the signs

A pulling sensation, vibration, flapping sound or tyre-pressure warning may indicate rapid pressure loss. Reduce speed smoothly and look for a safe place to stop.

Do not continue on a flat tyre

Driving on a deflated tyre can destroy the sidewall, damage the wheel and make the vehicle harder to control. Run-flat tyres also have distance and speed limits set by their manufacturer.

Repair or replacement

A repair may be possible when the puncture is in the central tread area and the tyre has not been driven flat. Sidewall damage, large penetrations and structural damage normally require replacement.

Pull over safely and make the vehicle visible

Choose a lay-by, quiet side road, car park or another place separated from moving traffic. Switch on the hazard lights and use the vehicle’s warning equipment where it is safe and lawful. Avoid bends, narrow verges and locations where the fitter would have to work beside a live lane.

Check for obvious damage

Once safely stopped, look for a completely deflated tyre, an object lodged in the tread, cuts, exposed cords or a sidewall distortion. Do not remove a nail or screw at the roadside because it may be slowing the leak. A photograph can help the fitter assess what tyre or equipment is likely to be needed.

Cold weather needs extra caution

Pressure can fall as temperatures drop, while potholes, standing water and road debris become harder to see. Check tyres before winter journeys and do not assume the pressure warning is only caused by the weather. A hidden penetration or rim leak can produce the same warning.

Motorways and fast roads

Do not attempt a wheel change beside live motorway traffic. If the vehicle can still be controlled, follow the road operator’s emergency guidance and stop at the safest available place. Leave the vehicle from the side away from traffic when it is safe, move behind a barrier and contact the appropriate recovery or emergency service. Mobile fitting can be arranged after the vehicle reaches services, a refuge or another accessible location where the work can be carried out safely.

Spare wheels and inflation kits

A usable spare or manufacturer-supplied sealant kit may provide a temporary way to reach safety, but only follow the vehicle handbook and never exceed the stated limits. Sealant does not make every puncture repairable and must be disclosed to the fitter. Before a long journey, check that the spare is inflated and that the locking-wheel-nut key, jack and tools are present.
