Tyre Tread Wear Check

Inspect tread depth, pressure, sidewalls and wear patterns regularly.

Check more than one groove

For most cars, the legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tread around the complete circumference. A 20p coin can provide a quick indication: if the outer band remains visible in a main groove, measure the tread properly.

The 20p test is only an indication. Uneven wear, damage or low tread outside the tested groove can still make a tyre unsafe. Check several positions around every tyre.
