Tread depth and uneven wear

Check the tread across the full width of each tyre. The UK legal minimum for most cars is 1.6mm across the central three quarters around the complete circumference, but tyres may need attention sooner if wear is uneven.

Sidewall damage

Bulges, cuts, exposed cords and deep cracking can indicate structural damage. Do not drive on a tyre with a bulge or exposed reinforcement.

Pressure loss and vibration

Repeated inflation, unexplained vibration or a steering pull can point to a puncture, rim leak, balance issue or another fault. Arrange an inspection instead of repeatedly topping up the tyre.

Cracks, bulges and exposed cords

Why wet and cold conditions matter

Low tread and hardened rubber can reduce the tyre’s ability to clear water and maintain grip. Braking and steering margins become smaller on wet, icy or contaminated roads. A tyre can therefore be legal at one measured point yet still need attention because of damage or uneven wear elsewhere.
